Volunteer Opportunities

Even if you wouldn’t consider yourself part of our regular Diakonos family, there are opportunities to volunteer with us on different projects. We will list specific opportunities here. If you are interested in one of these opportunities, please fill out the form below.

Cafe Volunteers

We set up a weekly cafe for residents at two low-income apartment buildings where friends that are transitioning out of homelessness move. This provides socialization opportunities for the residents as they work toward a more sustainable life. We need volunteers to come with us to these buildings to mingle with the residents. It may be as simple as just sitting down to talk with someone or playing a board game with them. This would be a great opportunity for retirees to get involved.

Our current schedule is as follows:

  • Penn Place, 1415 N Pennsylvania St, Tuesdays 12:30 – 2:30
  • Gladstone Apartments, 4317 E Washington St, Wednesdays 11:30 – 1:30

Spruce Up Projects At Gladstone

We are helping our friends at Partners In Housing spruce up the community room at the Gladstone Apartments. This is where we host our community meals and weekly cafe times. We’ve had a crew come in to clean come in to scrape old paint and clean the walls. We now need a crew to help with putting new paint on the walls.

Another part of the property that needs attention is the garden boxes along the back parking lot. They have fallen into disrepair and need to be fixed up before the growing season in the spring of 2020.

Furniture Pick Up

The Resource Coordinator at Gladstone has requested help creating a team to assist residents in picking up household basics, including furniture, at the St. Vincent de Paul location at 132 Leota St. Ideally, it would be good to have a team or teams that could do this one Saturday per month. Residents receive vouchers for the items they are eligible to receive. Since it takes three to four weeks for a home visit to determine what vouchers are needed, a regular schedule will help residents plan their trips. Volunteers would help load the items and transport them to the residents’ apartments. The team would need to bring a truck large enough to carry furniture items, although we may be able to work together to rent a U-Haul once a month.
