Diakonos Community is a faith community of people on mission together. Starting with this one community we are building a network of missional faith communities in Indianapolis that seek to serve and bring the life of Christ to those on the margins of society. We collaborate with community agencies that serve those in need and share Christ through meaningful relationships.

We believe that God uses many different approaches to church to achieve His purposes in the world. Some missional communities will function as an outreach extension of traditional churches. Others will exist as autonomous missional churches as part of the Communitas North America network. Regardless of the form each community takes, all Diakonos Communities seek to bring people together to experience life-transforming communion with God, whole-life community, and life-giving mission.

Our primary focus since 2013 has been addressing the issue of homelessness in Indianapolis. Currently, we are working with two apartment buildings where friends transitioning out of homelessness live to help build community and provide opportunities for spiritual formation. We also partner with multiple organizations and churches to plan and launch Circle City Village, a tiny house community for friends transitioning out of homelessness.

Perhaps the best way to describe us is as a non-denominational version of a Franciscan order (without all living in the same house). We seek to live by a common set of values and practices in everything we do.

“Re-opening” Information

Like all other faith communities, we have have had to adjust our schedule in order to help protect people from the spread of COVID-19. As Marion County slowly lifts the “Stay-At-Home” order, we will slowly be implementing face-to-face contact with people while making virtual options available for our most vulnerable friends. The schedule below is suspended until further notice. For information about our current activities, see our calendar in the upper right corner of this page or visit our Facebook page.

Penn Place Community Meal

The first and third Sunday of each month, we work with the staff at Penn Place to serve a community meal for residents there. While we wait for the community room to open, we will be serving our meals in to-go containers in the parking lot.

We meet at the new Daniel’s House property owned by Food 4 Souls.

Vespers

2nd and 4th Sundays 6:00 PM
233 Eastern Ave
Indianapolis, IN 46201

We are meeting again for a small group (max 25 people) Vespers Gathering. We will be careful to practice safe social distancing while we gather and ask everyone to wear a mask.

Our Sunday Vespers is a listening prayer time that draws on a variety of contemplative Christian traditions. We will have a set of worship songs playing in the background while we take time to slow down, listen to God, pray, and reflect on His work in our lives and community. We have art supplies and devotional material available for those who would like to use them. Each week we will have a Bible passage printed out for people to meditate on during this time. We will end with a time of sharing what God has been speaking to us during our prayer time.

We meet at the new Daniel’s House property owned by Food 4 Souls.
